Abit About External Links And Linking To Google

Everyone knows how important inbound links are but most people forget about there external links. External links are just as important as internal links and can damage your website so its always best to stay on top of them from a early stage. I personally don’t link out to anybody as I don’t have the time to monitor the links every month or so.

Linking to a bad website can seriously do some damage to your own website, you can lose Pagerank, get pages banned or lose your positions in the search results. If you are going to link out to anybody you want to check there website first and make sure nothing looks dodgy, you need to check who there linking to and who’s linking to them, you also need to see if there site appears in the search results and if it does check there cache version as well.

Its also strongly advisable not to link to sites that don’t relate to yours for example if you sell cars then don’t link to a dog food website as the content doesn’t relate in the slightest and google will think you have sold that link. Selling links is deemed as blackhat and google will punish you if it thinks you are selling links.

Along time ago when google first started up they rewarded websites for linking to them as google wanted all the traffic it could get but its believed today that linking to google wont give you any benefit whatsoever, but that theory cant be proved. People still link to google or google directory in the hope that it will benefit them in some way, its proven that linking to google wont hurt so it might be worth doing. I have linked to google in one of my previous posts where I mentioned google maps as a form of promotion and linked to there business centre to make it easier for users to sign up from my blog.

Linking to quality sites in your niche is a good idea as inbound quality links will do wonders and the same theory applies to external links, if you’re going to link out only link to the top sites in your niche. One seo expert say’s they link to the top sites as soon as they release there site, in theory this tells google that your website is just as knowledgeable as the sites you have linked too.
