Spam Comments Are More Harmful Than You Think

Nobody likes spam comments and if you are the person that submits the spam comments you might want to start thinking twice before doing it. Being a blog owner I get people leaving comments everyday, but today I woke up to a load of spam comments from one website and each comment was the same, the comment didn’t relate to my article and had spammy links within the content. The comments where promoting “gold” for online games so after marking the comments as spam I refreshed my dashboard and had another handful from the same website, I then marked these as spam. If you use the plugin called Akismet then the comments you mark as spam are read by the software and will hopefully prevent future comments like it.

This blog is fairly new at the time of this post, the site is about 1 month old so you can understand why I haven’t sorted any prevention until now. Wordpress comes with a plugin called Akismet, and as soon as I activated the plugin all comments from this spam website where being caught and automatically deleted. Akismet has a database which is compiled by the community every time they mark comments as spam, this means Akismet must have the website of the person spamming me already on there database. Akismet also marks certain comments as spam as they have been submitted to various blogs and the blog owners have marked it as spam, the most common spam comment is “Interesting post, i have bookmarked your site for future reference :) ”. Even though the comment doesn’t have any links within the content it is still classed as spam as its whats called a “global comment”, the comment has one purpose and that is to get approved and dsiplay the websites keyword as the authors name. The comment doesn’t really relate and provide any extra information to your article and is classed as spam.

If you comment post using software then beware, as your site can be marked as spam as well, and let me tell you, having your website marked as spam on any site is a problem. The last thing you want to do is give your website a bad reputation, being classed as a spam site will definitely give you problems. Theres some really good software out there that searches for blogs related to the keyword you enter, you still need to manually leave a comment but it allows you to write a more relative comment and get it approved compared to automatic comment posting. Whenever you link build using automatic software keep in mind your website could end up on a spam database some where like Akismet.
