Expiring Domains – Buying An Expired Domain
This tip is more for the advanced seo person as it requires a fair bit of research but the end results are fantastic. People buy domains primarily for the traffic and tend to look for domains that relate to theres (so the traffic can convert). Buying expired domains is a great way to boost your website and business/sales, expired domains that relate to your content are very valuable and are worth buying when you come across them. By buying expired domains you will get good traffic and if that domain has good inbound links then google will pass the juice from those links to your site.
Its known that google can take awhile when transferring the juice from one site to another so if you have bought a domain give it a few months before expecting to see any good results. What you don’t want to do is buy a domain that has been banned in google because if you redirect that domain to your new site you are telling google that your new site is related to the banned domain name. Its very important to do allot of research when buying an expired domain so dont just purchase the first thing you see.
When you buy a domain you have to do research in google as to what that site used to be and to see the quality of sites linking to it. If you buy a domain that doesn’t relate to your site you wont get any juice from those sites, but if you buy domains that relate to your site all the juice will come straight to you making your site more favourable to google.
Expired domains are good for increasing pagerank and boosting your websites traffic which in turn will boost your sales and popularity. When you buy a domain based on how much traffic it receives be prepared for the amount of traffic to go down over time. Hopefully if you buy a good quality domain that relates very highly to your content the traffic will maintain itself, but if a website owner realises that they are linking to a site redirecting then they may drop the link.
Its also possible to buy a domain that already has a pagerank, sometime people forget to renew a domain if they dont have it on auto renewal and I have seen websites with a pageank 6 expire and get snapped up by a lucky buyer. Having a pagerank 6 site relating to your content and redirecting to your new website will make it allot stronger, especially if doesnt have a pagerank.
When you redirect a domain name remember to do it properly from the domain registrar by pointing it to your new site using a 301 redirect.
