Google updates and changes its algorithm on how it ranks websites and assigns them Pagerank. Only a year or so ago all it took was loads of inbound links from any site to increase your Pagerank, now you have to put more thought and effort in to it.
Google wants to show its users the most relative websites for there particular searches, and to do that they have to alter there algorithm. If a website with a Pagerank 10 links to your website you will be assigned some of that Pagerank which will go towards getting you high Pagerank. The more websites the Pagerank 10 links too the more Pagerank juice gets shared meaning you will be assigned a smaller slice of the pie.
Getting a high Pagerank boils down to link building and focuses strongly on the quality of inbound links you produce. It’s easy to control your Pagerank when you have a freshly built site as the main link building is carried out by you and can be controlled, as the website gets older you will receive more useless links which can saturate the high quality links so make sure you keep building good quality links.
