Does Google Put More Weight On Brands In The Serps

by admin on 2009/06/20

This article will cover the myth, does google assign more weight to brands that appear in the search results for certain keyterms?. So for example lets say we have two websites selling the new apple iphone and if I was to go to google and type iphone will google automatically bring back the apple website over all the other results?

Well the answer is simple really, google doesn’t think anything of brands and wont assign a brand any extra weight over an independently owned site.

Lets say you do want to rank higher than the brand itself i.e apple, for the term, well what you will have to do is produce good quality content, get recognised as an authority site, increase your pagerank, build a reputation and build good quality inbound links. So basically you’re website can rank higher than a brand website, you just need to put in the search engine optimization like you would with any other site.

Just to clear up any confusion about the term “authority site” I am just going to explain how you make a website an authority website. It doesn’t matter how big or small your niche is, it doesn’t even matter what niche your in, it all boils down to getting your website ranked highly for a range of terms that relate to your site. If your website is ranking highly for long or short terms people will still see it at the top of google and your site will naturally become an authority site, especially if you are posting good unique content.
