This was a good question sent it by one of our readers, I’ll try to cover both aspects of redirecting a domain name and the positive and negative effects it can have on your site.

If you have a large amount of domains then you need to go through them and get rid of the ones that don’t relate to your main site, having domains pointing to your site that don’t relate to the content will be pointless and will only discredit your website. Once you are left with a list of good domain names you can start redirecting them using a permanent 301 redirect. A good way to determine weather a domain is a good domain to redirect or not is based on the inbound links to that domain, if the inbound links contain the type of keyterms you are targeting then it is worth using that domain. When you redirect a domain name it can take several weeks or months for the weight of the inbound links to be passed through to the new domain.

A good reason to redirect domain names is to increase pagerank and traffic. When you redirect a domain name all the pagerank juice from the links will be passed on to your main site and any traffic sent to those redirected domains will end up at your main site.

I only suggest redirecting domains if you want to consolidate other domains promoting your products or services. This is the main reason why you would want to redirect a large amount of domains, if your redirecting domains for blackhat purposes then you will be found out and penalised or banned.

Its down to you if you redirect domains but make sure you do a permanent redirect and your reason is legit or whitehat.
