With google’s updates and tweaks its time to give you a proper definition of what google classes as a good quality link.
It wasnt to long ago when you could build a link on any site you liked just for the sake of link building and promoting your keyterms. One of googles tweaks was to give less weight to those links built on websites where the content didn’t really relate to yours, why would a site in a completly different niche be linking to yours? and if your main link base is built on irrelevant links then google wont think there is anything of interest on your site. Having links on sites that relate to yours tells google that your website has some good content as your getting sites that relate to your content to link back.
A good quality link is one that not only comes from a site within your niche and relates to your website, it also has to have a pagerank as that shows that google favours it in some way and the links much look like they have been naturally placed.
Links on sidebars and footers tend to be there because they have been purchased as its easier for the website owner to quickly add a link to the sidebar or even footer. When you build links on relevant site try to get your links embedded within the content as google will naturally read the main content/article first and will come across those links. Google doesn’t always index a whole page and the places it is likely to miss out are the footers and sidebars, also google states in there guidelines that purchased links are against there terms of service so if you produce loads of links on sidebars and footers then that will look suspicious.
The reason why alot of people use google as a search engine is because the results it displays for the users search terms are highly relevant and that is down to many factors, the biggest one being how a website has built there inbound link structure. If you can try to focus only on relevant links then the other factors like trust and authority will come naturally.
